HOW PARENTS CAN PROTECT KIDS
Dr Peter Macaulay, psychology lecturer at the University of Derby, says:
‘The key solution is having a conversation about online risks and safety. Asking open and non-judgemental questions about their activity shows you’re interested, but it’s important you listen to what they have to say.
Avoid the conversation turning into an interview or lecture. Instead, try to have regular open discussions that will encourage children to come to you if they need support.
If children experience an online risk or danger, they may not come to you if they’re worried about consequences, like their devices being taken from them. Reassure them about the right thing to do, particularly if they see something they shouldn’t or are contacted by someone they don’t know.
Finally, put parental controls on devices to help manage time spent online and keep your child safe.’
