Terrifying dreams
Scientists aren’t entirely sure why we have them, but distressing dreams could be linked to stress or trauma. ‘Nightmares may indicate the presence of unresolved mental conflict, and the dream imagery can be our brain’s way of processing it,’ explains Samantha Briscoe, senior physiologist at London Bridge Hospital.

One technique used in the treatment of nightmares associated with post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) is ‘image rehearsal’. The idea is to practise visualising different endings to recurring nightmares during the day, giving your brain a bank of alternative ideas to use next time.
