I am worried about Bonfire Night

-

QWe have a new dog and with Bonfire Night coming I don’t know how he will cope with the fireworks. Is there anything I can do in advance to help?

EMMA SAYS

AMany – though not all – dogs are afraid of fireworks, and it’s distressing for the owner to see them upset. They may tremble, drool and pant. Some will hide, while others become clingy. If you’re unsure, it’s best to play safe and prepare as if your new dog will find them stressful.

Ahead of the day itself, make a den for your pet, ideally where it already goes for peace and quiet – perhaps under a table or in an alcove. Make it comfortable with towels, and drape a blanket to provide even more privacy. On the day, take your dog for a good walk well before dark so it’s naturally tired. Draw the curtains to hide flashing lights, and shut windows to muffle noise. Some people find it helps to leave a TV or radio on. Leave internal doors open so your dog doesn’t feel trapped and can go wherever it feels safest.

If it’s your dog’s first fireworks, it’s best for you to be home, and not hosting an event. Behave normally to reassure your dog you’re not scared or stressed, and don’t fuss over it.
