Is my cat diabetic?

-

QI’ve heard cats can be diabetic. Mine hasn’t been quite right lately, and I wonder if that’s the reason. What are the signs?

AEMMA SAYS

Well done for noticing your cat isn’t quite right.

I always trust an owner’s instincts, as you know your pet best and if they aren’t quite right then it’s always worth having a closer look. Common signs to look out for are excessive thirst, lots of weeing, and eating loads but losing weight. These are all red flags, but not just for diabetes. Diabetes can be well managed and your pet can continue to have a good quality of life, but the sooner it’s identified the better. You should make an appointment with your vet for a thorough check over. They will weigh your pet and have a good listen and feel. The next step is likely to be a blood test, which reveals glucose levels. This will help the vet decide whether or not your pet is diabetic.
