Medieval magic

Buda, high above the Danube, is fairytale-fabulous under a flurry of snow. Admire the spires of the Fisherman’s Bastion – a rambling lookout that seems plucked from the Middle Ages, although little more than 100 years old. From here, the view down across the river to Pest, and the pointy-gothic Hungarian Parliament Building, is spectacular. While up here, nose around Buda Castle, duck into St Matthias Church to admire the mystical interiors, and scrunch past old cafes and townhouses along the district’s cobbled ways.
