‘CHRISTMAS MAY BE OVERWHELMING’
The festive season can bring complex challenges for those living with dementia. Here are some tips from Dr Tim Beanland, Head of Knowledge at Alzheimer’s Society, to help you create cherished Christmas memories:
LET GO OF EXPECTATIONS
Many of us have treasured traditions we associate with Christmas, but it’s important to be adaptable to how the person with dementia is feeling, as well as offering them support.
BE INCLUSIVE
There is often a lot going on around Christmas, but that doesn’t mean that your loved one can’t still get involved in the festivities. Be sure to choose activities they enjoy and think about how to adapt them.
In September 2022, the leading cause of death in England and Wales was dementia and Alzheimer’s.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
AND FAMILIAR
If you’re making changes, such as with Christmas decorations, put them up over a few days. Try to stick to familiar routines and keep things simple.
CREATE A QUIET SPACE For some people with dementia, Christmas can become overwhelming. Create a quiet space where your loved one can take time out if needed.
SEEK SUPPORT
