My dog stiffens up in the cold weather

-

QMy older dog is reluctant to jump in or out of the car boot in cold weather. I’m wondering what’s up. Any ideas about what I should do?

AEMMA SAYS Stiffness and arthritis are worse in the cold months for pets, just as they are for humans. That said, it could be something simple like a torn nail or a cut pad. The best thing is to go to the vet, who can check the dog thoroughly and decide on the best treatment. If it is arthritis, there are medications that can help, but they come with side effects, so the vet will weigh up the risks and benefits.

The general advice for dogs with arthritis is moving little and often throughout the day, rather than one long walk. Glucosamine and omega-3 supplements can help loosen stiff joints and promote mobility. You might also consider getting a ramp to help your dog get in and out of the car comfortably, and avoid you having to lift it in and out.

One important point is you should never give your dog ibuprofen. Your vet will be able to prescribe drugs that do the same job but that are safe for pets.
