The ROYAL INSIDER

-

KARMA IS, AS THEY SAY, A FUNNY THING resumably, Harry thought that by writing his autobiography, Charles and William would come running through the meadows of Montecito, arms outstretched, and scoop up their errant boy, murmuring soft words of apology to him and Meghan.

That Harry would finally get the bigger bedroom at Balmoral, that the world would applaud his struggles, and that his stepmother would once again fall into public opprobrium.

However, Harry appears to have become the butt of US talk show jokes, his approval ratings have plummeted, and now he and Meghan have, according to some polls, become less popular in America than Camilla.

It’s an extraordinary and complete role reversal from just six weeks ago, when their popularity was still riding high Stateside.

Now, according to a poll released by Newsweek last week, almost half of Americans think they should be stripped of their royal titles – a dramatic about turn when as recently as December, 43 per cent of Americans said they should keep their titles, while 27 per cent said they should lose them. Those figures have been turned on their head, with 45 per cent now in favour of Harry and Meghan losing their royal status. US voters appear to have become disenchanted with the pair – Harry’s popularity has plunged 45 percentage points, and Meghan’s by 36.

PHarry was ridiculed by Jimmy Kimmel

It’s not just the average American who is exhausted by the couple’s complaining, it’s also Hollywood. The very people Harry and Meghan would like to sit with at their table. Among the many indiscretions shared in Spare was the indelible moment that Harry smeared his frostbitten penis with his late mother’s favourite lip cream (you truly couldn’t make it up). US talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who previously mocked Harry’s broken necklace/dog bowl trauma, made fun of this titbit on his late-night show. When even Bethenny Frankel, who became a millionaire through the Real Housewives franchise, said that Harry and Meghan were ‘playing from the Housewives’ handbook’, you’re surely done. She said, ‘‘That someone could share with the media texts between family members, much less royal family members – it’s crazy.’

Even Hollywood, it seems, has limits, and selling out your family’s private life just isn’t the done thing.

It could explain why Harry and Meghan didn’t attend the BAFTA bash in LA .

Spare may be a runaway bestseller but is this merely a Pyrrhic victory for The Only Way is Sussex?
