‘My man has an infected toenail’

Woman's Own - - Ask The Doctor -

Q

My husband has an infected ingrowing toenail. He is currently on his fourth course of antibiotics in the past 12 months. Can you recommend anything we can do to stop this problem constantly coming back? Emily, Bristol

A

Ingrowing toenails can occur after an injury but are usually the result of cutting the nails too short and poorly fitting shoes. Let the nail grow out, then cut it straight across and make sure your husband changes socks daily as sweaty feet make things worse. As the nail grows out, you can soften the skin with oil and use a cotton bud to gently push the skin away from the nail. If he still has problems, his GP may recommend partial or full removal of the nail.
