Motorway service stations generate up to five times more ‘profit’ than supermarkets when they sell petrol and diesel, according to the campaign group Fairfueluk.

At Moto, Welcome and Roadchef service stations, unleaded petrol is sold at an average profit of 20.6p per litre and 21.2p per litre for diesel, while on supermarket forecourts, the average profit was just over 3p per litre on petrol and 4.2p per litre on diesel.

The figures are based on the average pump price minus the wholesale price, which is the amount retailers pay.
