This week, the pair couldn’t be more delighted when Caroline gives birth to a baby daughter called Sarah. However, it’s not long before Dwight
(Luke Norris) realises all is not well with their tiny newborn girl and he makes a shock diagnosis that turns their world upside down.
‘Caroline and Dwight have very different ways of coping with it’, explains Gabriella Wilde, who plays her. ‘Caroline reacts in the only way she knows how, which is by shutting down.
‘She is lucky because Dwight is a good man and he doesn’t blame her. He allows her to go through her own process.’

Back in the 18th century of course, medicines and care were pretty primitive so a seriously ill baby was almost certain to lead to tragedy… so can the couple find a way forward?
‘Dwight has great compassion and there is a deep understanding between them’, says Gabriella, ‘Although they go through this difficult experience and face the worst tragedy, he’s still there for her.’ Poldark continues on BBC1 on Sunday at 9pm
