Ask the doctor
Q I am a few weeks into a 20-week training programme for my first marathon at the age of 55 and have developed the most excruciating pain under the heel of my right foot. How can I get rid of it? Simple painkillers aren’t touching it.
A You may have plantar fasciitis, which is inflammation of the fibrous tissue supporting the arch of the foot. It is common in middle-aged adults. I’m sorry but you will have to rest it for a while. Try rolling your foot back and forth over a bottle of frozen water and speak to your GP about stronger anti-inflammatories and stretching exercises. When you do start running again, make sure you invest in good-quality running shoes with cushioning and arch support.
