He won’t accept that she’s gay

-

Q Our 19-year old daughter is a wonderful person – loving and happy and until recently my husband’s favourite. However, a few weeks ago she told us what I’d always suspected, that she’s gay. I am proud of her for feeling strong enough to tell us but my husband refuses to accept it, saying she’s being silly and she’ll come round. She’s hugely upset by his attitude. What do I do? Name withheld

AIt sounds like your husband never guessed your daughter was gay and that’s why his reaction is so different to yours. Give him time to accept that she has come out and he will ultimately see she is the same child he has always loved. Meanwhile, support her in any way she needs and reassure her that her dad will come round.
