‘It’s strange having a scent named after me’

Why Michael Bublé is back in town and smelling so good!

-

Your fragrance for women, By Invitation, was an award-winner. Now there’s MB Pour Homme...

Finally, for the gentlemen! For me, the son of an Italian immigrant who grew up on a fishing boat, it’s strange having a fragrance named after me. It’s as far away from reality as possible, so it’s pretty cool. A friend of mine asked me recently if I ever thought that was going to happen, and I said, ‘No, I did not!’

Do you know your top notes from your bottom notes?

You mean the rose petals, the vanilla and the hint of tobacco? When I did the first fragrance – By Invitation – I went to the perfumers and it was amazing. What I learnt most was that those people, in the same way that I understand music inherently or by osmosis almost, is what they are like with scent. As much as I like to micro-manage things, it was nice for me to step out of the way and trust them. Imagine what a privilege it was that they thought enough of me – Michael Bublé – to make a fragrance for me.

If we could distil you in a bottle what would you smell of?

Into words? It would be rose gold patchouli and hockey puck! All in one! Gorgeous!

When you go on stage you’ll be enveloped by the smell of fans!

It happens all the time. I was in a hotel in London and the elevator door opened. When I stepped in I knew instantly that someone was wearing By Invitation. I don’t know what’s more sad – that I know it so well, or that I like it!

So, what does Britain smell of to you?

The truth? So

‘I understand music by osmosis’

many memories. When I first came to the UK someone offered me Marmite and I loved it. The other thing was beer. I loved stopping my tour bus and going to the pub by the hotel and it was so much fun. By 1pm, after some ale, you feel so good! Like Frank Sinatra, I feel sorry for people who don’t drink because when they wake up that’s the best they are going to feel all day.

What was it like being back on stage in the UK again in London’s Hyde Park?

I think the guys at the concert were more nervous than I was because it’s been a couple of years. For me, I only had joy. I was so excited. I wish I could have been back sooner and felt all that love and the connection with all those beautiful souls in the audience. I had a blast. I didn’t want it to end but I had to because there was a curfew. If not, I would have carried on.
