Woman's Own

Our columnist Dawn Neesom has her say

Yay! It’s October, a brand new month of falling leaves, long dark nights and scary stuff. No, not Halloween, but that royal wedding. You know the one none of us really care about but will still have to pay £2 million plus for? Look, I love a wedding as much as the next woman but I am struggling with Princess Eugenie walking up the aisle. The 28-year-old daughter of Prince Andrew and Fergie is due to wed Tequila brand ambassador (yes, it really is a job) Jack Brooksbank, 32, at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle on the 12th.

Weirdly, it’s set to be a bigger do than Meghan and Harry’s, with more guests, an actual ticket ballot for members of the public to go and that eye-watering bill for security. And yes, it’s taxpayers’ money – yours and mine. Of course the royals need protection and, with all of the senior members of the family, including the Queen, set to attend, we’d expect to stump up.

But the really offensive thing about this is that Eugenie, while she’s probably a lovely girl, is only ninth in line to the throne and not exactly up there with Megs and Kate in the glamour stakes, is she?

Plus, she’s invited a load of celebrity mates, including Robbie Williams and wife Ayda Field, the Beckhams and George Clooney. As you do. And it’s these multi-millionaires that we’re also forking out to protect. Er, why can’t they pay for their own bodyguards?

All I really want to see is her wedding

dress (she’s got previous for dodgy taste), the look on the royal faces when Fergie flounces in as mother of the bride and Prince George and Princess Charlotte as pageboy and bridesmaid.

Ooh, and possibly what Eugenie’s big sister Beatrice – who is maid of honour – will wear on her head. Pretzels are so last season, after all!

‘Why can’t these multi-millionaires pay for their own bodyguards?’
