Drink-driving at Christmas

Woman's Own - - ASK THE DOCTOR -

Q My husband is quite a heavy drinker and I know he will be indulging over the festive season. He’s pretty good about taking taxis home after a night out but I worry about the morning after, particularly with the Christmas drink-drive campaign. How much can he safely drink in one evening to be sure he won’t be over the limit in the morning?

A I’m afraid that is a really tricky question to answer, as we all absorb and metabolise alcohol differently and even in the same person, those rates can vary day to day as there are so many variables. As a rough guide, we metabolise around one unit of alcohol per hour. If he is a regular drinker, he may break down alcohol more quickly, but if he is in any doubt, he should avoid getting behind the wheel.

Drinking heavily during party season may lead to being over the limit the next morning
