Do I exercise a bad back?

Woman's Own - - ASK THE DOCTOR -

QI sprained my back recently and have been struggling to get comfortable sitting at my desk when I’m at work. I saw my GP who recommended some back exercises, but I’m worried I could make things worse. Aren’t you supposed to rest injured muscles?

AWe used to recommend rest for back problems but your doctor is right. NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) recommends regular exercise, particularly stretching and strengthening, to improve your core stability and generally staying as active as possible to keep your back healthy. You may also want to speak to your work about checking your desk and chair to improve posture or the possibility of a standing desk.

Ask your work for a desk assessment to help improve symptoms
