All the showbiz gossip with Richard Arnold, plus he chats to Corrie’s Sally Ann Matthews

Why Corrie’s Sally Ann Matthews is hoping for a sober start to 2019!

- Richard Arnold

So Christmas has been a blast for your character Jenny!

Drunk as a skunk, walking into doors, falling down stairs, a cracked rib and in a drunken haze setting up Liz as a call girl because she’s so jealous of her and Johnny. Then she knocks Liz down by accident after drinking outside the fish shop.

Jenny just can’t control her paranoia…

She’s convinced she’s driving Johnny into Liz’s arms and gets blotto, and then she can’t control her actions. It was looking good on Christmas Day when he reassured her he loved her, but it all unravelled about Jenny tracking Liz and Johnny’s phones and her putting Liz on the escort website. Everything Jenny wanted to put behind her to make a fresh start comes out because people can’t keep their gobs shut.

Liz collapses after being hit by Jenny in the car and Johnny takes the wrap…

Jenny wants to tell Liz because she’s feeling wretched and responsible but she can’t stop him from taking the blame for it. Liz doesn’t remember what happened but when Johnny confesses, she believes him because on Christmas Day he fired Liz and wanted her out of their lives. Now Johnny is looking at a more serious charge, even though he’s only protecting Jenny, which leaves her riddled with guilt.

‘I feel I’ve been drunk for months’

You must be spent! Do you find it easy to act drunk?

I’m knackered! I feel like I’ve been drunk or hungover for four months. I’ve done outrageously funny drunk once but not morose. You hear tips on how to play drunk and one of them is to try and be sober because the more sober you try to appear, the more drunk you’ll look.

What’s been the highlight of the year for you?

I loved the episodes when Johnny confessed to Jenny that he had slept with Liz and Liz braved out her time at the Rovers. Great writing, great directing. Personally, summer was fabulous because it was so sunny and we could get out on our boat.

Do you make New Year’s resolutions?

Never have them! No! If I make one I will only inevitably break it so I don’t bother.
