Side effects of antidepressants

-

Q I have been on sertraline for anxiety and depression for many years and am doing well. Just recently, I’ve been having hideous nightmares. I read the patient information leaflet and it mentions nightmares as a side effect. Should I stop the sertraline and if so, do I need to wean down slowly? A Never stop a prescription drug without discussing it with your doctor. In the case of sertraline, if you did decide to stop, you should definitely wean down slowly and your GP will advise you about that. But nightmares as a side effect tend to occur early on with this drug, so I would be looking at other causes for your symptoms, such as increasing stress. Make an appointment to see your doctor who will help you sort this out.
