1 2 3 How to… Book a holiday for less

-

There’s nothing like choosing a sunny getaway to lift the January blues, but you don’t need to break the bank!

Cheapest flights

Don’t assume budget airlines offer the best prices – always shop around. Try websites such as momondo.co.uk and kayak.co.uk, which will show the cheapest deals from different airlines on the route you want to fly on. Also, if you’re happy to spend longer getting to your destination, consider taking an indirect flight on the same route as it could slash costs.

Do haggle

If you’ve found your perfect package holiday, and have done your research to make sure you’ve got the cheapest deal available, see if you can get any more money knocked off. Contact the travel company directly and start negotiating. Even if they can’t reduce the price any further, they may throw in extras such as free kids’ meals. Always check cashback websites for deals and do remember to buy your travel insurance as soon as you book.

Add it all up

Be savvy about your board basis. Work out how much it costs per meal per day if you book B&B, half-board or full-board – then assess if you’re likely to spend more if you choose room-only and pay for all your meals as you take them. Sourcing menus with prices on from your chosen hotel can help you decide.
