Friends Like These by Sarah Alderson, Mulholland Books, PB, £14.99

This tense new thriller expertly taps into the modern obsession with social media. Becca has everything, but she’s also one of those people who plasters her enviable existence where nobody can miss it – and it drives her colleague Lizzie mad. The interaction between both these characters soon becomes more sinister and the climax is a particular highlight. Just when you believe the conclusion has unfolded, your expectations will be completely flipped.

Mary, Queen of Scots Out 18 January

Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie excel in this lavish costume drama about the regal rivalry between strong-willed cousins Mary, Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth the First. Ronan’s Mary is beautiful, idealistic and astute. Robbie’s pox-scarred, wigwearing, insecure Liz can’t compete. The film plays fast and loose with history, but the costumes, castles and landscapes are stunning.

Feeling the post-christmas and New Year blues? Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer will change all that. They return to Big Night Out and present a brand-new series full of their original, trademark comedy featuring songs, sketches, stunts and hilarious special effects. Let the belly laughs roll!

Glass Out 18 January

You’d better brace yourself for neck-snapping plot twists galore as director M Night Shyamalan picks up where he left off from 2016’s bizarre psychological thriller, Split. James Mcavoy reprises his role as the disturbed kidnapper with multiple personalities and Anya Taylor-joy is back as his feisty one-time captive. But we’re really excited by the return of the characters played by Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson in Shyamalan’s 2000 movie Unbreakable. We can’t wait to see how they all tie together in this instalment.

Under My Skin by Lisa Unger, HC, PB, £7.99

Losing her husband Jack a year ago has sent Poppy into a downward spiral of self-medication and haunting dreams – now she can’t tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not. Twisted and dramatic, the tension builds and makes for a dark and fascinating psychological read.

Beautiful Boy Out 18 January

Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet are heartbreakingly good as father and son in this harrowing true-life drama about the impact of drug addiction on a family. Carell is successful US journalist David Sheff and Chalamet is his golden boy son, Nic. But Nic has become addicted to crystal meth and, for all his love and care, David is powerless to keep him on the straight and narrow. As Nic goes round and round the endless crushing cycle of rehab and relapse, we’re put through the wringer too.
