Around a fifth of leukaemia patients have had frequent infections leading up to their diagnosis because their immune system isn’t working properly. ‘It’s not normal to get repeated infections,’ says Dr Perry. ‘As well as cancer, there are a host of possible reasons, such as fatigue, thyroid problems, hormones or poor diet. Your GP may recommend blood tests to find out more.’
