Travel: Seven reasons to visit Jamaica

It’s an alluring destination for lovers of clear seas, adventure and nature

-

1 Paradise island

Known as the island of rhythm and sway, and also famed for being the birthplace of reggae music and, of course, delicious Jamaican jerk chicken, this Caribbean island has plenty to offer. Dip your toes into the crystal-clear blue sea, stroll along long white sandy beaches and soak up the Jamaican hospitality.

2 Eat well

With nine restaurants and seven bars to choose from at Sandals South Coast, you are spoilt for choice. Cafe de Paris will provide your morning coffee and freshly-made juices, while Sushi On The Sand offers a fine dining gourmet experience. Split lunchtimes between the Jerk Shack for authentic Jamaican specialities and Schooners Seafood Grill for casual seaside dining. Your tastebuds will not be disappointed.

3 Winter sun

Escape the cold winter in the UK and head to the island any time between December and April to soak up the sun. The combination of warm weather and low rainfall during these months make it the best time of year to visit for a laid-back beach holiday.

4 Local hospitality

There are not many places that you go to and are greeted with a warm welcome and friendly smile at any time of the day. The locals are chilled, laid-back and seem genuinely happy all of the time. No rush and no stress is their motto, which is unexpectedly easy to mimic after a few days spent in Jamaica.

5 Resort life

Set on a two-mile stretch of white sand beach, surrounded by luscious gardens, the adults-only resort of Sandals South Coast is made up of three ‘villages’; the Italian, Dutch and French. Three swimming pools offer plenty of space to swim and lounge. You’ll find the majority of guests by the swim-up bar at the main pool, where the friendly bartenders will be shaking up Jamaican Smiles, the resort’s signature cocktail. Secluded hammocks and private cabanas on the beach provide shade and privacy. The resort is vast, but never feels crowded. Montego Bay airport is a 90-minute drive.

6 Adventure & activities

If water sports are your thing, sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking are all included. You can use the facilities as many times as you please. If you haven’t tried paddleboarding before, you won’t find a better location to step out of your comfort zone. For something more relaxing, take a trip on one of the glass-bottom boats. Do this early morning and you’ll be one of the only boats on the water. If you are looking to get off the beaten track, Island Routes, the adventure tour company, offer various daily excursions. 7 Drink well

Cocktails and fine wines are aplenty at this resort. Indulge in chilled rum concoctions or simply let the staff know your preferred spirit and the expert bartenders will get to work mixing you up something special, off menu. Enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail or two at the Latitudes Overwater Bar. It’s one of the best spots and the perfect place to watch the sun go down.
