It’s been in the pipeline for years, but it seems we’re finally getting a third Mamma Mia! film
The islands of Greece are set to come alive again with the sounds of ABBA, as we’ve been given the strongest hint of a third Mamma Mia! movie yet. According to producer Judy Craymer, musical icon Cher, 74, is ready to become a dancing queen again and Dame Julie Walters, 71, will even come out of retirement for the third movie to play Rosie Mulligan. Cher appeared in the musical comedy sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in 2018 as Ruby Sheridan, the mother of Meryl Streep’s Donna Sheridan. And she’s reportedly ready to shimmy her way down the Grecian port’s dock again, as Judy – who has worked on the stage and cinematic versions of the ABBA musical – teased her plans. Speaking to the producer about the prospect of a third instalment of the popular films, Cher reportedly told her, ‘No one wants to see us
old people on the screen.’
But when Judy, who has ‘always said it would be a trilogy’, hinted that she’d love to see Cher and Meryl sing ABBA’S hit Slipping Through My Fingers together, Cher apparently couldn’t turn down the offer.
Judy claims she replied saying, ‘I’m there! When do we start shooting?’
If the Hollywood superstars do sing the same ballad that Meryl sang to her screen daughter, played by Amanda Seyfried, in the first film 13 years ago, it will be an emotional moment for fans.
However, our dreams of hearing Cher and Meryl singing together would mean a ghostly appearance or a flashback, as Meryl’s character Donna was killed off. But regardless of how Meryl appears,
we’re excited
for another shimmering spectacle packed with ABBA tracks.
Although nothing is officially in the works for the third movie yet, the rest of the star-studded cast – which included Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, Dominic Cooper, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried, Stellan Skarsgård and Lily James – are reportedly keen to get the ball rolling.
