Celebrity-inspired hair colour trends to help you to revamp your look
Chunky highlights
Forget subtle, barely-there streaks, thick, soft highlights are in this spring. Take large areas from the top and underneath sections of your hair and lighten up the colour just enough so it blends to create a natural, tonal look. Applying a toner is always a great idea to neutralise any contrasting brassiness, too. If you want a professional job, head to a salon or try it yourself with an at-home kit like Jerome Russell Bblonde Maximum Highlighting Kit No2, £6.49, Boots.
Burnished copper
Rich copper tones are in! This burnt orange shade looks fabulous next to fairer skin tones and is so easy to do yourself. Try using Moroccanoil Colour Depositing Mask in Copper, £6.85, lookfantastic.com, to add a quick burst of colour. The added argan oil will sort any dryness, leaving it silky smooth and shiny. If you’re going to the salon, you can refresh your copper colour by using a mask like Josh Wood Colour Semipermanent Treatment Gloss in Copper, £19, joshwoodcolour.com.
Honey blonde
Balayage or ‘ombre’ colour hair saw a surge in popularity the last few years, but for spring 2021, honeycoloured locks are back. Ditch the dark roots/light ends and instead, head to the salon and ask for an all-over honey hue. If you can’t get to the salon, do it yourself with Garnier Nutrisse Crème in 7 Dark Blonde, £5.79, lookfantastic.com.
Pastel hues
Have some fun with your look this year and opt for a pretty pastel shade. Colour doesn’t have to be permanent or expensive, instead try a temporary colour like I Heart Revolution Rainbow Shot in Pink Universe, £3.99, Superdrug. This 3in1 colour, shampoo and conditioner lasts one to three washes and turns hair a subtle shade of pink, but the lighter your hair the richer the colour.
Cool girl grey
Going grey doesn’t mean drab colour, spice up your silver by taking your tone to cooler temperatures. L’oréal Paris Age Perfect Beautifying Silver Care Toner in Touch Of Pearl, £7.99, Superdrug, is fab for turning dull grey hair into bright, silver. Maintain your colour with a blue shampoo like Pantene Pro-v Hair Biology Silver & Glowing Shampoo, £5.99, Boots, to prevent yellow tones.
Deep and dark
If you have black hair, you may start noticing greys a little sooner than blondes will. Black hair is surprisingly multi-tonal but by deepening the shade and covering greys, your hair will look far more glossy. Try Clairol Permanent Root Touch-up in 2 Black, £5.99, lookfantastic.com, to conceal regrowth or fix greys. An intense hydrating mask like John Frieda Hydrate & Recharge, Deep Soak Masque, £6.99, feelunique.com, will stop ends from going dry.
