‘We made history!’

Helen, 40, says:

‘Winning the Olympic gold was a truly amazing experience. It made us the first same-sex married couple to win at the Olympics and the first married couple to take gold since Cyril and Dorothy Wright in 1920.

‘It was a really important moment for us as a couple, and a turning point for LGBTQ athletes worldwide.

‘But the best thing was the reaction we had from the public, and helping people to feel more confident in themselves.

‘Now, if you’ve got a boyfriend, girlfriend or are married, it’s a non-issue. It’s not a taboo, it’s just part of who we are. It makes me proud of my sport.’
