Woman's Own

‘I loved her youthful energy’

-

Lucy Dyer, 48, lives in Sevenoaks with her son Harry, 21, and has been friends with Amy, 29, for over 10 years. I was enjoying a few al fresco drinks after work one evening in April 2011, when I noticed a young girl standing outside the bar we were at. She was on her own and looked a little wobbly on her feet.

‘Are you alright?’ I asked. ‘I’ve lost my friends,’ she told me. ‘I need to get my train home.’

So I left my workmates, hailed a taxi and went with her to London Bridge station. Her name was Amy, then 19, and in the back of the cab we had a giggle about how tipsy she was. I gave her my number so she could let me know she had arrived home safely, but I never expected to see her again.

However, she messaged me later and I asked if she fancied having a drink together one night. The following week, we were back laughing and joking – about everything from work to our disastrous love lives! I’d separated from my son Harry’s dad a few years earlier, so I had plenty of stories to tell. That evening, I discovered there were 19 years between us. In fact, she was nearer Harry’s age than mine. Still, we had a lot in common. I liked shopping and getting my hair and nails done, and so did she, and we both loved a big night out.

Over time, we became firm friends. When we weren’t out clubbing, we were helping each other out with our dating dilemmas, and Amy even showed me how to use dating apps. I loved Amy’s

youthful energy and enthusiasm for life.

When her son Joey was born in April 2017, I gave her all my tips about becoming a mother, and I was thrilled when she asked me to be his godmother.

I’m so glad I bumped into Amy that day. It was the beginning of a lifelong friendship.
