1985 HAPPY TIMES

This photo and this time brings back so many wonderful memories. I’d recently met Pete, who I’d end up marrying and having a family with, and we were in the throes of young love. It was around 1985, I was 21, and as we both hoped to make it in the music industry – me as a vocalist and Pete as a bassist – we didn’t have much money, but it didn’t matter to us, we were in love.

The scarf around my hair was secondhand, and I wore an old black dress and belt. The puppy, Suki, was a gift to us from our landlady at the time. I spent hours at the hairdresser getting my brown hair bleached regularly.

The bleach hurt my scalp, leaving me with sores, so I eventually had to stop, but I loved the way it looked edgy, embodying one of my favourite famous women at the time, Paula Yates.
