During the second lockdown I lost my job. I thought I was OK about it, but I have totally lost my self-confidence. My friends are encouragin­g me to apply for new roles, but even the thought of it puts me into a tailspin. I feel anxious all the time. I used to have a bit of a drink problem so I’m terrified of taking anything addictive, but feel I need something to calm me down. A

Speak to your GP and tell them exactly what you have told me. There are plenty of non-addictive medicines available to help with anxiety. They will also be able to advise on other non-medical therapies, such as cognitive behavioura­l therapy, which is very effective. I know a lot of my patients who suffer with anxiety have also found hypnothera­py helpful.
