3 easy ways to... protect your home

Julian Hartley, insurance director at Tesco Bank, shares his top tips on how you can help reduce the chance of falling victim to burglary

-

1 SENSIBLE STEPS

‘Always lock your doors and windows when leaving the house, even if you’re just popping to the shops,’ says Julian. ‘Also, locking all windows and doors before going to bed will also ensure your home is protected when burglars are most likely to try to enter.

‘Before going out in the evening, be sure to leave some lights on and close your curtains. Or put your lights on timers so they come on automatically. If thieves are watching your house, this can make it more difficult for them to be sure the property is empty.’

2 TAKE PRECAUTIONS

‘From laptops to car keys, ensure your valuables are hidden out of sight in a safe place,’ he says. ‘Remove your door keys from locks and put them in a safe place that’s out of sight too.

Consider fitting security measures like a burglar alarm and security lighting outside your home that is triggered by movement – this could make a burglar think twice about breaking and entering.

‘Never leave keys under the doormat or under a flowerpot. Doing this can make you vulnerable to a break in and could invalidate your home insurance policy too.’

3 CHECK YOU’RE COVERED

‘Check your home insurance policy hasn’t lapsed to ensure you’re never without valid protection; always make a note of when the policy is up for renewal,’ he says.

‘Also, do make sure your current policy reflects your current situation and if it needs updating, contact your insurer.’ For more tips, read the Home & House Security Advice guide at tescobank.com.
