...Cut back on alcohol
✣ WHY? Whether you’re downing a bottle of Pinot on the weekend or guzzling a glass every night, drinking too much alcohol affects our physical and mental health. You can raise your risk of cancers, liver disease, high blood pressure and bone-thinning osteoporosis. ✣ NOT TOO LATE The more you drink, the higher the risk of health implications. So cutting back will help. Women and men shouldn’t drink more than 14 units a week – one unit is half-a-pint of beer or one shot of spirits, and a small glass of wine is 1.5 units. ✣ HOW? Try abstaining from alcohol during the week and enjoying a glass on weekends. Switch socialising with a walk or coffee. Thinking of going teetotal? Don’t be discouraged, ‘it often takes more than one attempt,’ says Dr Wynne-jones. Find tips at drinkaware.co.uk and nhs.uk. Think you have a serious problem? See your GP for help.
