Forget all the scary stories about empty supermarke­t shelves and delivery lorries stacked up at ports. The shortage we should all be concerned about is much worse. A lack of babies.

Yes, really. The UK’S birth rate is falling so fast that in a few years’ time all us golden oldies won’t have enough youngsters to support us.

Enough to make you spit your dummy out, isn’t it?

Evidently many young people just have other priorities. So much so that one law firm, Burgess Mee, has recently appointed the country’s first ever fertility officer. Her job is to reassure the company’s young female lawyers that their careers will be safe even if they have babies.

So, young folk, time to, er, lie back and do your bit for England (Wales, Scotland, NI). After all, our Prime Minister is setting a sterling example almost single-handedly…
