VIRUS HAS LEFT ME LEAKING

Q

For the past couple of years, I have leaked urine when I cough or sneeze. I had COVID-19 a few weeks ago and was coughing a lot. Now I leak even just reaching up to get something off a shelf. Will this get any better?

A

What you are describing is stress incontinence caused by weakening of the pelvic floor muscles, which support the bladder. Your recent infection will have put extra strain on those muscles, but there are exercises you can do to help. Ask your GP to refer you to a physiotherapist or continence nurse specialist.

MY SISTER HAS A DRINKING PROBLEM

Q

My sister has always drunk a lot, but recently it’s become out of control. She’s hit my partner, smashed my front door by accident and fallen down our stairs. I also find myself having to pay for damages she’s made in bars or cabs. I want her to seek help, but she laughs at any suggestion that she has a problem.

A

Until your sister admits she has a problem, she won’t seek help. Limit the impact her drinking has on you – be firm about how much she drinks when she’s at your house, and don’t be drawn into her drink-related problems. In many ways, sorting out her messes stops her from taking responsibility. Contact Drinkline on 0300 123 1110 – a confidential helpline for anyone concerned about someone else’s drinking.
