‘Eight weeks into our relationship, I was pregnant!’

Katie Lumby lives in Telford with her husband Matt and daughter Macey-rose, four.

As I walked into the kitchen where I worked as a waitress, the new chef Matt made another flirtatious comment. I rolled my eyes. It was February 2016 and we were both in relationships, so it was just banter.

But a couple of months later, we both found ourselves single, and the flirting seemed to step up a notch.

‘Morning gorgeous!’ he said with a wink as I stepped into the kitchen.

I gulped, wondering if I did have feelings for him, after all.

By July, we’d started seeing each other and it was no secret from the rest of our colleagues. Matt spoilt me with gifts, meals out and a trip to Torquay.

COMMITMENT DILEMMA

Then, just eight weeks into our relationship, I realised I’d missed my period. Standing in the bathroom, in September 2016, I looked down anxiously at the testing strip – I was pregnant.

‘Come over now,’ I texted Matt as my mind whirred with panic.

We’d only just got together, so how on

earth would we be able to raise a child?

At first, Matt thought I was breaking up with him, but when I told him the news, he seemed to relax.

‘I’ll stick by you no matter what,’ he told me –but I was dubious. We barely knew each other.

For weeks, we agonised over what to do, even considering a termination at one point. But, with reassurance from our families, we decided to give parenting a go – and, with their help, we bought a house.

When we were settled, Matt and I started to prepare for the baby – and to get to know each other!

Matt was amazing throughout the pregnancy and was by my side when Macey-rose was born in April 2017.

Becoming parents made our relationship even stronger. We got married in September 2021, and now we’re expecting our second baby.

Sometimes life seems uncertain – but with enough love, it all falls into place.
