Woman's Own

WHAT ABOUT US?

-

Talking of holidays, the boss of Disney has announced that she wants at least half of all future characters to be LGBTQIA or racial minorities.

Which is, of course, all very laudable as we live in a vibrant and diverse world.

BUT – and this is a big but – if inclusion is Mickey Mouse’s new buzz word, what about us middle-aged women?

When was the last time you saw an older woman in a Disney movie who was a beautiful heroine saving the world from evil?

You didn’t, did you? Because the only ageing women in the films are either witches, wicked stepmothers or evil.

And while I love Cruella de Vil and Angelina Jolie’s brilliant Maleficent, they’re at best flawed, at worst a bit psychotic.

Older men, meanwhile, are usually kindly kings or wise wizards.

I mean Minnie Mouse is 94 this year and it’s taken all those years for her to be allowed to actually speak!
