Stories of explorers and mysterious shipwrecks have long since captured the imaginatio­ns of children and adults alike. So it’s no wonder that the discovery of Endurance, the lost ship of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, has prompted excitement 107 years after it sank beneath the icy waters.

Discovered on 5 March 2022 almost 3km under Antarctica’s freezing Weddell Sea, the ill-fated vessel was found perfectly preserved on the sea bed. Footage from underwater robots even shows the name ‘Endurance’ in its shining gold font across the ship’s stern.

The wreckage in 1915 and (left) Shackleton 1915 have been brought to life by the find, inspiring a new generation to learn about Shackleton’s expedition across Antarctica.
