Ancient Egyptian cheese
Digging for treasures is one way to build up an appetite, but it’s unlikely the discovery of some 3,200-year-old cheese in an Egyptian tomb made anyone very hungry. The tomb of high-ranking Egyptian official Ptahmes had been uncovered several years before, but it wasn’t until 2018 that scientists discovered the ‘whitish mass’ recovered in a jar was cheese. The discovery was significant for our understanding of the Ancient Egyptian way of life. Until then, there was no recorded evidence of cheese production in Ancient Egypt, but it turns out they may have loved the stuff. In fact, scientists reported that the sheep’s and goat’s milk cheese was probably the oldest ever found.
