During my early 50s, I went through ‘the change’. I never needed HRT and periods are long forgotten. I’m now 56 and was totally unprepared for a full-on period that came last week. It was quite heavy and lasted five days. Should I be concerned? A

Vaginal bleeding a year or more after your last period is called a ‘postmenopausal bleed’. Your doctor will want to know and will arrange some tests including an ultrasound and a biopsy. To put your mind at rest, nine out of 10 postmenopausal bleeds turn out to be nothing serious, but it is important to check.
