I have been managing my type 2 diabetes with diet and lifestyle for the past couple of years but, at my recent review, the nurse said I needed to start medication. She prescribed me metformin, which I take twice a day. This might sound trivial, but the pills are giving me very smelly wind. It is so embarrassing; is there anything I can do?

Around one in eight people notice flatulence when they start taking metformin. This often settles on its own but if symptoms persist, ask your GP about a slow-release form, which often has fewer side effects.
