Watch your posture

-

Aside from the dangers of dropping beetroot on your shorts, eating on a picnic blanket is surprisingly good for you. ‘Sitting on the floor to eat is common in countries such as India, Japan and China and has physical benefits,’ says yoga and holistic wellness expert Cheryl Macdonald. ‘In yoga, the crossedleg Sukhasana pose improves flexibility, posture and increases oxygen flow in the body to relieve stress. This can bring an element of mindfulness to your meal. It is also thought that the action of leaning forward to your food stimulates the stomach muscles to aid digestion.’

Try it for yourself:

✣ Sit with legs gently crossed. ✣ Place small cushions (or rolled up jumpers) under both knees to make the position more comfy.

✣ Rest your plate on the floor and engage the tummy muscles when bending to take a bite.

✣ Keep your back straight as you chew and don’t slouch.
