The bra has gone bust. Evidently sales are declining as younger women ditch them in favour of letting it all hang out naturally. All very well when gravity is on your side and the rigours of babies and breastfeeding haven’t bothered your boobs, but for us ‘slightly’ older ladies, ditching our bras could mean resting our breasts on our knees.
Bra wearing drooped 70% during lockdown, according to the University of Portsmouth, and it seems we’ve just not bothered going back.
Actress Florence Pugh is probably the ultimate example, attending the Valentino haute couture show last month braless under a sheer pink chiffon dress.
To the young women championing their chests in this way it’s a sign of their independence and ‘don’t mess with me’ attitudes. Unfortunately, for the men watching it’s (literally) titillation for their benefit.
