Can we take control of her affairs?
Q
For both me and my sister, it’s been obvious that our mum has been having problems with short-term memory for some time. She saw a specialist this week and has been told that she’s in the early stages of dementia. The consultant suggested that we should think about setting up a lasting power of attorney. I’m not sure where to start – is this something I should do through her GP?
A
There are two types of lasting power of attorney (LPA). A health and welfare LPA and a property and financial affairs LPA. If your mum has a formal diagnosis then you will probably want to set up both while she is able to give informed consent. You can apply online at gov.uk
