When potential donors approach a licensed clinic they are asked to disclose any problems in their own and their family’s medical histories. They will be screened for serious genetic diseases, plus conditions such as HIV, hepatitis, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea, before being allowed to donate. Both the donor and recipient undergo mandatory counselling to ensure they understand all the implications.
