What the law says

Home insemination using donor sperm is legal in the UK, but the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) strongly advises against it. The inseminated person’s partner may only be considered a legal parent if the couple are married or in a civil partnership. The donor is considered the legal parent of any child conceived outside of an authorised clinic. Get a written agreement with the donor beforehand.
