3 easy ways to... Protect your home from burglary

Darker autumn evenings as the nights draw in provide perfect cover for thieves. Here are some ways to deter them from picking your home

-

1 PUT THEM OFF

Think about installing security lights which are triggered by movement outside your home to deter potential burglars. And it’s a good idea to invest in a burglar alarm too, says Halifax Home Insurance – not only is it a deterrent, it can reduce your home insurance premium as well.

2 LOCK UP AT ALL TIMES

While we all know to lock doors and windows when we leave the house, do it when you’re home too, says Aviva. Its research found that 24% of people don’t lock doors while at home, and 45% leave windows unlocked in unoccupied rooms, which could allow easy access for criminals. You should also make sure that you lock sheds and garages, particularly if they’re not attached to your property. While a dog can be a good deterrent, if you don’t happen to have a hound at home, a ‘beware of the dog’ sign can be enough to scare away wouldbe thieves. Finally, don’t leave desirable items on show or near windows, and close curtains in the evening – or even during the day if you’re not in the room.

3 DON’T LET THEM IN

In 7% of cases where a burglar entered someone’s home they pushed past an occupant to get into the property, warns Aviva. To guard against this, it’s wise to consider fitting a spy-hole, safety chain or video doorbell.
