DAME JOCELYN BARROW

-

When Jocelyn Barrow, an English teacher in London, met Martin Luther King in 1964, it inspired her to co-found the Campaign Against Racial Discrimination in the UK. The campaign’s most celebrated achievement was the formation of the 1965 Race Relations Act, which made racial discrimination illegal for the first time in Britain.

Three years later, extra laws were put in place to make discrimination in housing and employment illegal. That same year, Jocelyn became a member of the Community Relations Commission, set up by the government to encourage ‘growth of harmonious relations’ between different races.

Jocelyn later became the first female black governor of the BBC. She died, aged 90, in May 2020.
