How to avoid making mortgage mistakes

-

CHECK YOUR CREDIT

When you apply for a mortgage the lender will check your credit report – so make sure you do it first. You can find out how at moneyhelper.org.uk. Get any inaccuracies corrected and do everything you can to boost your credit score, such as getting on the electoral roll. For more tips on improving your credit score visit experian.co.uk.

SAVE WHAT YOU CAN

Lenders also look at your income and outgoings, so be extra-careful with your cash in the months before you plan on applying. Aim to put some money into your savings each month to show you have good money-management skills.

RISKS IF YOU CHANGE JOBS

Changing jobs just before you apply for a mortgage may make it harder for you to get one. This is because some lenders will require you to have been with your employer for a certain period of time. It doesn’t mean you won’t be able to get a mortgage though – it will depend on your circumstances. But if you’re considering this it’s a good idea to do some research first.
