Christmas traditions on a budget
DIY DECORATIONS
For a creative tradition that costs pennies instead of pounds, why not try making your own decorations? There’s lots of inspo online, such as salt-dough tree decorations (bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/ salt-dough-christmas-decorations) or spiced gingerbread ornaments (goodto.com/recipes/gingerbreadchristmas-tree-decorations).
FEED FESTIVE FRIENDS
To rustle up some ‘reindeer food’ with younger children, simply mix a handful of wild bird seeds with rolled oats and dried cranberries, then scatter them in the garden or put in a bowl on your doorstep for passing reindeer. Whatever Rudolph doesn’t finish, the birds will help with! For a detailed recipe, visit rspca. org.uk and search ‘reindeer food’.
FREEBIE LIGHT SHOW
Another way to boost those festive feelings is a trip to admire the best Christmas lights near you – either in a nearby town or city, or by walking around your local neighbourhood. Some people put on amazing displays outside their homes, often for charity. Check local Facebook groups to find some in your area.
