HELP! IT HURTS WHEN I WALK

-

QMy husband and I walk about five miles every day, and have done so since we retired. It’s helped me maintain my weight and is good for my mental health. For the last six months, I have found walking downhill increasingly painful. At times, I’ve had to go slower, or even cut the walk short. This week my left knee has completely given way on me, causing me to fall. How can I stop this happening? I really don’t want to give up walking for good.

AYour symptoms could be due to arthritis in your knee. Make an appointment to see your GP who will examine the knee and arrange an X-ray. If the X-ray confirms osteoarthritis, they will probably suggest you see an orthopaedic surgeon to discuss treatment options, which may include surgery, but the decision will be made based on the severity and site of arthritic change.
