The actress on starring in a new version of the novel… Joely Richardson has appeared in many films and TV series, but one of her most memorable roles is Lady Chatterley in the 1993 adaptation of the controversial 1928 novel by DH Lawrence.

Now she’s starring in a new version of the erotic tale, albeit in a different role…

‘What I love about it is that I’m still part of propagating the story of Lady Chatterley and Mellors and DH Lawrence, who’s a writer I’ve always loved,’ says Joely.

The Crown’s Emma Corrin plays Connie, who marries Sir Clifford Chatterley (Matthew Duckett). But when her husband returns from the

First World War with debilitating injuries, Connie starts to feel trapped and embarks on an affair with gamekeeper Oliver Mellors, played by SAS Rogue Heroes star Jack O’connell.

As Connie becomes the subject of local gossip, she must choose between love and the strict expectations of Edwardian society. Joely plays widow Mrs Bolton, who’s hired to care for Clifford and who discovers the affair.

‘Mrs Bolton believes in love,’ says Joely. ‘That’s such a beautiful thing. She’s lost her husband and wants others to love – she’s on Clifford’s side, Connie’s side and Mellors’ side. I love people like that.’
